Safe In The Arms Of Jesus

Deuteronomy 33:27:

“The eternal God is a dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms.”

Recently on YouTube, I watched the funeral of George Beverly Shea.  He lived to be 104 and was soloist for Dr. Billy Graham for almost 60 years.

I had the privilege of hearing him sing in person six times.

At his funeral, they played the hymn sung by him, “Safe in the arms of Jesus”.

This took my mind back to when I was living on Folly Mountain, Nova Scotia in 1941.  | would be 8 years old.  My brother Layton would be 6 years old.

Our neighbour’s son-in-law had died suddenly with appendicitis.  In those days, a lot of funerals were held in their homes, and in those days we travelled by horse and buggy.  We had approximately 4 miles to travel and the weather wasn’t the best.

By the time we got to Londonderry Station, it started pouring rain.  My father and mother were seated in the buggy and Layton and I were standing in the back all dressed in our Sunday best.  We arrived at the funeral all soaking wet.

The house was crowded.  We had to stand in our wet clothes and everyone was singing “Safe in the Arms of Jesus”.  I still remember it, although it was over 75 years ago.

CHORUS:

Safe in the arms of Jesus

Safe on His gentle breast

There by His love o’er shaded

Sweetly my soul shall rest.
