Never Quit Trying

Never Quit Trying

When I was attending Eastern Pentecostal Bible College in Peterborough, Ontario, every Friday we had a special speaker at our Chapel service. One Friday, our speaker was a pastor of a church in Pembroke, Ontario, who had previously been president of this college when I was in my first year. The title of his message that day was “When Is a Man or Woman a Failure?” He kept repeating this until the end of his thirty minute sermon. Living Alone

Living Alone

Luke 10: 27:  “The man answered, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.  And,love your neighbor as yourself.'”

There are many seniors today who live alone, many times because their spouse has passed away.  Such is the case with a minister friend with whom I have kept in contact.  He has been a close friend for many years and was a very successful minister.  Today, he is living alone in a small apartment.  His wife passed away, and as a result of having cataracts, he is unable to drive.  His family and friends drive him wherever he has to go and he cooks his own meals.  Just recently, I called him and he jokingly said, “I just got back from eating at Tim Horton’s and I don’t have to wash dishes!” read more

God’s Protection

My father died when I was 16 and my younger brother, Layton, was 14.  Mother could get $50 a month Mother’s allowance.  I quit school in Grade 9 and went to work.  My first job was burning green slabs at a mill in Upper Belmont, Nova Scotia.  I was making $4 a day with room and board.  Eleven men slept in a camp approximately 10 by 12 feet and we burnt these green slabs to heat the camp.  In the morning, it would be so cold that one of the men would arise early to start the fire with green slabs and a little kerosene. read more

What’s In Your Bible?

What’s In Your Bible?

I remember from my early years living in Folly Mountain, there were three books in our home:  The Bible, and the Simpson Sears and Eaton’s Catalogues.  Mother did all her shopping by catalogue.

One minister’s wife told me that she and her husband were visiting in a home one day and it was his practice to read a scripture and pray before leaving.  He asked if they had a Bible handy and a little boy said, “Yes”, and, “I know where it is.” read more
